Derron Sandy and The 2 Cents Movement Awards 2024

Recipient of the TTPBA’s Award for Community Excellence

The 2 Cents Movement was founded in 2012 with a vision of empowering youth through artistic expression and social engagement.  T It has positively impacted the lives of numerous young people, fostering critical thinking, creativity and self-expression.  There is a rich history of promoting spoken word poetry, giving young voices an opportunity to be heard on critical issues.

2012 also saw the inception of Verses 2012, one of the largest poetry slams in the Caribbean.  The event later transitioned into The First Citizens National Poetry Slam and became a flagship platform for poets.

In 2013, the organisation began its first Secondary School Tour, introducing spoken word poetry to secondary schools across Trinidad and Tobago, inspiring and engaging students with the art form.  The reach of spoken word widened with “The 2 Cents for Change” project via YouTube and in 2016 the organisation began engaging with primary schools. It has performed at schools regionally and internationally, providing an international platform for its poets, encouraging individuals to use their words as a catalyst for change.
